Tricky Shadeland Canopy, Weather Protection & Kayak Storage Solution

9/5/2025
Kamo, Whangarei

In the heart of Kamo, Whangarei, Shadeland took on a unique project to create a practical yet eye-catching weather protection and kayak storage solution. The 35 sqm canopy not only connects the driveway to the front door but also provides a dedicated area for the client’s racing kayaks to stay dry and secure.

The canopy was built using a 3mm aluminium frame, powder-coated in striking New Denim Blue and paired with a White Ferrari Precontraint 502 PVC membrane. With limited fixing points and a tricky corner transition, we had to get creative. A custom 100x50mm rear beam was installed, anchored to reinforced timber 6x2s, allowing for a secure, sleek finish.

One of the standout features was the 90-degree rope track that allowed the roof to curve perfectly around a tight corner without compromising its waterproof seal. We also focused on maintaining budget constraints, utilizing an offset beam design to extend the canopy over the walkway without the need for extra footings.

Challenges like managing the offset created by a retaining wall and ensuring the structure’s integrity around the soffit meant some out-of-the-box thinking. In the end, we delivered a canopy that not only handles Northland’s unpredictable weather but also seamlessly blends with the home’s architecture.

Key Features:
  • 35 sqm tension canopy using 3mm aluminium framing
  • White Ferrari Precontraint 502 PVC membrane
  • Powder-coated in New Denim Blue for a bold, modern look
  • 90-degree rope track for seamless corner transitions
  • Offset beam design allowing for walkway overhang without additional footings
  • Custom frame connections and timber reinforcement to support structural integrity
Challenges Overcome:
  • Limited fixing points beneath the shortened soffit
  • Creative corner transitions with the 90-degree rope track
  • Offset managed by a custom beam design
  • Maintaining waterproof integrity while working around complex structural elements
