Creating Outdoor Learning and Play Spaces at Dargaville Intermediate
Dargaville Intermediate needed a solution to combat the relentless Northland weather that had been hammering classroom entrances and limiting outdoor play and learning space. Shadeland stepped in to deliver a comprehensive canopy installation, transforming underused areas into functional, weather-protected zones.
The project included the installation of five large tension fabric canopies spanning over 30 meters, connecting key classroom blocks to the gymnasium with a sheltered walkway. This not only provided a dry passage for students during wet weather but also created a versatile space for outdoor learning, assemblies, and playtime.
Additionally, a 16-meter-long freestanding canopy was installed to cover a previously exposed play area, allowing students to stay active and engaged outside, regardless of rain or intense sun. The canopy design not only kept kids dry but also provided essential shade, making it a practical and welcoming space for both students and staff.
With weatherproof aluminium frames and durable Ferrari 502 fabric roofing, the canopies were designed to withstand Northland’s strong winds and heavy rain, ensuring long-lasting protection for years to come.
Shadeland’s solution didn’t just solve weather issues — it redefined how the school utilized its outdoor areas, turning them into vibrant, year-round spaces for learning, playing, and gathering.
