Creating a Covered Entertaining Hub in Hokianga with Ziptrak Outdoor Blinds

This Hokianga whānau had crafted a stunning covered deck area set against one of the most picturesque backdrops you can imagine. But despite the roof overhead, the deck was still wide open to the elements—wind, rain, and salt-laden breezes rolled through with nothing to stop them. What they really wanted was to turn this space into an all-weather haven where they could host whānau and friends year-round.

Shadeland recommended the installation of 11 Ziptrak outdoor blinds paired with some custom flashings for a clean, weather-sealed finish. One of the key challenges was ensuring the blinds could be mounted seamlessly to the existing pergola structure without disrupting its aesthetic. We achieved this by installing matching timber posts that complemented the deck’s natural look while giving us the strength and fixings required for the Ziptrak system.

We used satin black powder-coated components for a sleek frame that blended in with the surroundings, and opted for ‘Alpaca’ fabric—a multicoloured thread option that brought texture and warmth to the enclosure. The result? Over 120 square metres of sheltered space, beautifully integrated into the environment.

Even better, the team delivered this project with a quick turnaround so the space could be fully ready in time for a special birthday celebration. The transformation was incredible—offering privacy, weather protection, and a comfortable place to gather no matter the conditions.
