Second Storey Pergola with Tinted Glazing and Custom Posts – Bay of Islands Beauty

Bay of Islands Beauty

Perched above Paihia’s world-class views, this glazed roof pergola project was all about pushing limits—design-wise and install-wise. The client wanted to maximise their second-storey balcony space without the hassle of building consent, so the Shadeland team got creative to deliver a stylish and functional outdoor room that ticked every box.

Challenge #1: Angled soffit
The home’s soffit wasn’t your typical flat edge—it had a unique angle that made attaching the pergola a challenge. The solution? We engineered custom angled soffit brackets to connect the rear beam of the roof to the house securely and seamlessly.

Challenge #2: No deck penetration
The second-storey deck was covered with floating tiles, meaning we couldn’t drill down into it. To work around this, our team designed bespoke pergola posts that reached out over the glass balustrade and anchored back into the beam line of the first-floor roof. Not only did this protect the deck integrity, it created a clean, elegant structure with serious wow-factor.

These one-of-a-kind posts tested our brains (and patience), but once installed, the finish was flawless.

The final product
The pergola was finished in Titania powder coating for a crisp, clean look that matched the home’s exterior. The glazed panels were tinted to reduce glare and heat—perfect for relaxing in Northland’s summer sun. To add functionality and privacy, we installed a Ziptrak mesh blind on the rear along with a custom infill panel to shield the space from neighbouring properties and the wind.

At 20sqm, the structure sits right on the maximum size allowable under New Zealand’s building code for second-storey structures without consent—another smart design move by the Shadeland team.

The outcome
This was a job that required clever thinking, custom engineering, and some seriously precise workmanship. The result? An elevated outdoor room that feels like it was always meant to be there, giving the homeowner all-weather protection and next-level views of the Bay of Islands.
