When a Little Roof Transforms into an Outdoor Room

Some projects begin with a simple idea, more outdoor space and better weather protection but end up transforming a home. That’s exactly what happened for this client who wanted a custom outdoor roof that was both functional and stylish. The result is a smart, seamless addition that feels like a natural extension of their house.

Their main goal was to create a dry, sheltered area to enjoy the outdoors all year round. They also wanted to extend the roof beyond the existing concrete slab to make the space more usable, all while keeping the look consistent with the home’s colour scheme. Because the property is in a high wind zone, strength and safety were just as important as appearance.

The project had its challenges. The concrete pad was angled, so we had to customise the design for a level install. The client didn’t want posts dug into the soil in front of the slab, so we had to rethink the roof’s support structure. The wide span of the roof meant we also needed strong reinforcement and good drainage.

We installed two custom downpipes to handle rainwater, connecting everything to the home’s existing stormwater system for a clean finish. The roof was cantilevered 900mm to keep the posts off the soil and preserve the tidy look. Extra bracing and strong joints were used to meet wind zone standards. We also added Ziptrak Blinds—perfect for shade, privacy, and withstanding strong winds.

In the end, the client got a covered outdoor space that looks great, works in all seasons, and adds real value to their home. It’s now the perfect spot for relaxing, dining, or entertaining—rain or shine.
