Choosing the Right Polycarbonate Roof: Clear vs Tinted vs Opal Pergola Panels

23/3/2026
Kerikeri & Whangarei

Glazed roof pergolas have quickly become one of the most popular outdoor shade solutions across Northland and for good reason. They create a bright, modern outdoor space that feels connected to the outdoors while still offering protection from the elements.

One of the biggest decisions homeowners face when choosing a glazed roof is selecting the right panel type: clear, tinted, or opal.

A quick fun fact while many people refer to these as “glass roofs,” our systems actually use high-performance polycarbonate flat sheets. These are 4.5mm thick, UV-stabilised panels designed specifically for durability and long-term outdoor use.

Our panels are installed using a custom, trademarked rubber sealing system, meaning there are no fixings through the top of the sheet. This eliminates one of the most common long-term issues with outdoor roofing leaks. Each panel is pressure-sealed on all sides, similar to a window system, creating a clean finish and reliable performance.

All panel types block 99.9% of harmful UV rays, so no matter which option you choose, your family is protected.

From there, it really comes down to how you want the space to feel.

Clear Panels – Maximum Light, More Heat

Clear panels let in the most light and maintain a completely open feel. They’re a great option when the goal is to bring warmth into a space, especially in cooler areas or where the pergola connects directly to the home.

However, in Northland’s warmer climate, clear panels can sometimes create a greenhouse effect, trapping heat underneath. On sunny days, this can make the space uncomfortable without additional shading.

Another thing to consider is condensation, which can occur on cooler mornings as the temperature rises.

Best suited for:

  • Adding warmth to outdoor or adjoining indoor spaces
  • Maximising natural light
  • Cooler or shaded properties

Tinted Panels – The Northland Favourite

Tinted panels are by far our most popular choice—and for good reason.

They offer the best balance between light, visibility, and heat control, reducing heat by up to 45% while still allowing you to see through the roof. You can still enjoy views of the sky, whether it’s the sun during the day or the stars at night.

Tinted roofing creates a space that feels like a true outdoor room—you’re protected, but not closed in.

On a bright Northland day, tinted panels provide a comfortable shaded area without losing that outdoor connection.

The only trade-off is that on gloomy or overcast days, tinted panels can slightly darken the space compared to lighter options.

Best suited for:

  • Everyday outdoor living
  • Entertaining areas
  • Homeowners wanting a balance of shade and light

Opal Panels – Maximum Comfort and Soft Light

Opal (white) panels are growing quickly in popularity, especially for homeowners prioritising comfort.

These panels offer the highest heat reduction, up to 70%, making them ideal for hot, exposed areas.

Instead of allowing direct sunlight through, opal panels diffuse the light, creating a soft, even brightness underneath. This works particularly well on overcast days, where the space stays light and usable rather than dim.

Because the panels are translucent (not see-through), they also have a practical benefit—you won’t notice dirt or pollen buildup as easily between cleans.

The trade-off is that you lose visibility through the roof, which some homeowners prefer to keep.

Best suited for:

  • Hot, sun-exposed areas
  • Creating a cooler outdoor space
  • Maintaining brightness even on grey days

So, Which Panel Is Right?

It really comes down to how you want to use the space.

  • Clear: Best for warmth and maximum light, but can run hot
  • Tinted: The best all-rounder for Northland conditions
  • Opal: Best for heat reduction and soft, even light

On a perfect sunny day, it’s hard to beat tinted panels for that outdoor feel. But on an average or overcast Northland day, opal panels often come into their own by keeping the space bright and comfortable.

Cleaning & Maintenance Tips

To keep your polycarbonate roof looking its best and performing long-term, regular maintenance is essential.

  • Clean panels every 3 months using clean water and a mild, neutral detergent
  • Always clean on an overcast day to avoid streaking
  • Never clean panels when dry—this can scratch the surface
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners or high-alkaline products
  • Do not use pressure washers, as they can damage the protective coating
  • Remove substances like oil, paint, or adhesive promptly using isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth, then rinse with clean water
  • Avoid harsh chemicals such as benzene, gasoline, acetone, or similar solvents

In Northland, pollen buildup can be a real issue. If left too long, it can etch into the surface and cause discolouration, so regular cleaning is especially important during high pollen seasons.

If you’d rather not handle this yourself, Shadeland offers a full in-house cleaning service, helping keep your roof in top condition year-round.
