Shade Sail Installation for a Safer Sandpit at Kokopu Childcare Centre

Installing a shade sail in a childcare environment is all about getting the details right — safety, durability, and a finished result that works in real conditions. For this project at Kokopu Childcare Centre, the goal was to create reliable sun protection over the sandpit, giving kids a safer and more comfortable place to play.

Below is how the project came together, step by step.

Step 1: Site visit and measuring the play area

We started by assessing the sandpit location and measuring the space that needed coverage. Because this was a childcare environment, we also looked closely at access, nearby play equipment, and where our work zone could be safely set up.

Step 2: Factoring in the slope and planning water runoff

One of the main challenges on this project was the natural slope of the ground. Rather than trying to “fight” the site, we designed the layout to work with it.
That meant planning pole positions and heights to create the right fall across the sail, so rainwater would run off cleanly instead of pooling.

Step 3: Setting out pole locations for safety and performance

Once the design was confirmed, we marked out where each pole would go. Pole placement matters a lot with shade sails. It affects the sail shape, the tension, clearance under the sail, and how safe and tidy the final result looks around an active play area.

Step 4: Establishing a safe work area on a childcare site

Before any machinery started, we put safety controls in place:

  • The work zone was clearly isolated so children and staff stayed well clear
  • The team confirmed safe access for the machine and a clear path for moving materials
  • Pre-start checks were completed on the equipment
  • Clear communication was maintained on site throughout the install, especially when the digger was in use

Step 5: Using a machine auger to dig deep post holes

Shade sail poles need deep, solid foundations to handle the tension loads from the sail (and the weather). To get the holes deep enough efficiently, we used a mechanical auger to drill the post holes.
This gave us clean, consistent holes at the depth we needed, while reducing manual digging and keeping the job controlled and tidy. All dirt was removed from the area.

Step 6: Positioning poles and setting them in concrete

With the holes drilled, we carefully positioned the steel poles and checked the level and heights. This was especially important because the slope meant each pole height played a role in the sail’s final fall and water runoff.
Once everything was confirmed, the poles were set in concrete to create a strong, stable base.

Step 7: Installing and tensioning the shade sail

After the pole foundations had been completed, we installed the shade sail and tensioned it into place. Correct tension is key for long term performance as it keeps the sail stable, helps it handle wind, and supports proper water runoff.

Step 8: Final checks and a safer play space

To finish up, we checked clearances, tension, and the overall shape of the sail to make sure it was performing exactly as intended.

The result is a safe, practical shaded sandpit area that Kokopu Childcare Centre can use with confidence. The kids now have a more comfortable outdoor play space with improved sun protection — and the sail design means rainwater sheds properly, helping the structure perform well for years to come.
