Installing Shadeland’s Largest Motorised Awning on the Tutukaka Coast

Behind The Project- Step by Step

Step 1

Starting the project Richard and his partner were in the process of building their new family home on he beautiful Tutukaka Coastline. The original conversation was how they could add some cover to the beautiful new deck they were having built.

Many options were discussed before they settled upon a retractable motorised awning that would span an incredible 7.5m x 4m. (Shadelands biggest awning to date)

Such a large awning design required us to ask our usual supplier in New Zealand to look outside to our Aussie neighbours for this to be created. Been imported meant a slightly longer time frame from original discussions to final product installation.

Step 2

So after the waiting for design and shipping the excitement began with the delivery of the product. The task ahead was quickly highlighted by the sheer size and weight of the packaging!

Next up was time for the serious planning to begin. After scheduling an install date that worked for our client, we then had to take the necessary steps in preparing our structural work for this huge 180kg awning!

We acquired some beautiful sheen finished durable lengths of wood. These were primed and painted ready to take out for installation.

Step 3

Now for the serious stuff to begin. Upon arrival on site, we begin a final measurement check and confirmed our install plan with Richard. Also working alongside our electrician to confirm how we would set up the motor to the house. After we had all the measures and calculations we needed, we got to work!

The sheer weight of the awning required us to strengthen the soffit above with multiple reinforcements into where our load bearing brackets would fall. We then began mounting our brackets. Not your average awning means not your average prep work!

Step 4

It was time for the real fun to begin now. We had our full Whangarei install team ready to lift. Alongside our newest and most important member, our Electric Portable Lifter we prepared to mount the awning.

With some slow movements and lots of communication and planning the lift began.

Up and up it went! This was the moment we were all very thankful for our newest member of the team taking the brunt of the weight for us!

All went well and with our brackets already in place it was a quick transition to the awning hooked into position and safely mounted. This allowed our electrician to step in and do his part giving us power to the motor. His well planned out route back to the light switch inside worked perfectly.

Step 5

With everything now in position and powered up it was time to see the awning out in all its glory. A quick motorised setup to the manufacturers guide allowed us to check was all working correctly.

Upon completion we all stood back to admire a job well done along with some of Northlands beautiful views!

Richard and his wife were both loving it and very happy with how the process went from original consult to install on the day. They are now looking forward to hosting their first Christmas in the new house and showing off their beautiful new awning!
